300,000 people evacuated due to floods in China

By IANS,

Beijing : Floods in southwest China’s Sichuan province forced more than 300,000 people to be evacuated, authorities said Monday.

The Qujiang river, a tributary of the Jialing river that feeds the Yangtze, China’s longest waterway, began to swell Sunday, reported Xinhua.

By Monday, the waters crossed the alert level.

Floods hit Guang’an city as well as 49 townships and neighbourhoods.

About 2,000 homes toppled and over 10,000 were damaged.

The government evacuated over 300,000 people from the city by midday to minimize risks, as flood control experts estimated that all major streets will be submerged and flood water could measure 10 metres in the deepest areas.
