Patna: The Awami Urdu Nifaz Committee Bihar has written to newly appointed Director General of Police (DGP) Mr Abhyanand to instruct all police officers to have their nameplates in Urdu also along with Hindi at their offices. Senior Urdu journalist Mr Ashraf Asthanvi, who is also General Secretary of Awami Urdu Nifaz Committee Bihar, has met the DGP in this regard.
In his letter to DGP on 12th September 2011, Asthanvi reminded the DGP of the 31st January 2011 letter from Rajbhasha Secretariat regarding Urdu nameplates of officers but the instruction was never implemented. Asthanvi urged the DGP to issue instruction to all police officers to have their nameplates with designation in Urdu also along with Hindi.
According to Rajbhasha Act 1981, at all public places, important buildings and names and posts of officers should be Urdu (second official language of the state of Bihar) along with Hindi. It is compulsory but it has never been implemented.
Awami Urdu Nifaz Committee Bihar has been working for the spread of Urdu in the state for last several years.
