Nine die in Iraq blasts

Baghdad : Nine people were killed and some 90 wounded in a spate of bomb attacks in Iraq’s Karbala city Sunday, police said.

The nine victims died in four bomb attacks in Karbala, a source told Xinhua.

The first blast occurred at about 9.30 a.m. when a bomb went off outside the passport and identity card office in Karbala, some 110 km south of Baghdad.

Minutes later, a second blast ripped through the scene of the first blast, the source said.

Two blasts in a quick succession followed after about 20 minutes when Iraqi security forces were at the scene of the earlier blasts.

Many Iraqi soldiers and policemen were among the victims.

The attackers apparently followed an old tactic which was to have an initial explosion to attract security forces and people, then set off another blast to get heavier casualties, the source added.

Sporadic attacks are still common in Iraqi cities despite the dramatic decrease of violence over the past few years.
