New Delhi : Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) senior counsel in Supreme Court K.K. Venugopal Tuesday termed as “affront” the remarks of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Yashwant Sinha that his arguments on behalf of the probe agency, which included the defence of Home Minister P. Chidambaram, were “laughable”.
Venugopal told the apex court bench of Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice A.K. Ganguly that all that he had said was a part of his plea on behalf of the CBI and describing them as “laughable” was not right for the BJP leader.
The counsel told the court that on an earlier occasion, a senior anchor of a news channel had described as “bizarre” his pleas in the hearing of the petition challenging the appointment of P.J. Thomas as the central vigilance commissioner.
Venugopal had appeared for Thomas in the case.
In response, the court said: “One trying to malign anyone (lawyer) who are also officers of the court, we will take cognizance of this.”
Justice Singhvi said that they had found that despite their requests and repeated observations, some people in media were still going ahead.
