New Delhi: Muslims have increased their presence in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi with seven women candidates from the community winning the elections. The new MCD will have 15 Muslim councilors, an increase of 4. In the outgoing body, there were only 3 Muslim women, now their number has gone up to 7. The results of the elections held on 15th April were announced today.
Of 15 Muslim winners, 8 are from Congress, 3 from RLD, 2 BSP and 1 each from BJP and SP.

In the present body, there were 11 Muslim councilors. Of 11 Muslim councilors, 8 were from Congress, 1 from BJP while 2 from Lok Janshakti Party of Ram Vilas Paswan.

This was the first election after trifurcation of the 272-seat MCD – North Delhi, South Delhi and East Delhi. The incumbent BJP has won 138 of 272 wards while Congress has won 77. Other parties and Independents have won 57 wards.
BJP has got clear majority in two civic bodies – North Delhi and East Delhi while it is 7 short of majority in South Delhi.
Congress though could not win any body it has improved its tally from 67 in the last poll to 77 this time.
