Gilani to visit Britain in May

By IANS,

Islamabad : Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani will visit Britain May 8-13 to attend an annual review meeting on bilateral relations, the Pakistani foreign ministry said Wednesday.

Gilani will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including senior ministers and MPs, for the first Annual Review Meeting of the Enhanced Strategic Dialogue, Xinhua reported.

The two countries formally launched the dialogue in April 2011 during a visit of British Prime Minister David Cameron to Islamabad.

The dialogue covers trade, finance and development assistance, education, health, culture, defence and security.

During Gilani’s visit, the two prime ministers will review the progress in the Enhanced Strategic Dialogue and launch a Trade and Investment Roadmap to increase bilateral trade to 2.5 billion pounds ($4 billion) by 2015, the Pakistani foreign ministry said.

The visit will enhance the existing relations between the two countries, the ministry said.

“Both the countries cooperate and coordinate on global and regional issues with a view to promoting stability, peace and security,” it said.

Britain is Pakistan’s second largest trade partner in Europe and an important source of foreign investment and remittances.

Cameron has committed an assistance of 650 million pounds for primary education in Pakistan. Britain has also agreed to facilitate academic links, student exchanges and increase numbers of Pakistani students in its universities.
