Therapy for Maruti factory violence victims

By IANS,

Gurgaon : To help injured employees overcome the trauma of the July 18 violence and arson at Maruti’s Manesar plant, the company has roped in psychologists for counselling, said a spokesperson Monday.

The employee welfare team set up last week was assessing individual needs with teams of “specialists on board” to conduct individual and group therapy sessions for the injured. The counselling and healing session kicked off Monday.

Teams of well-known psychiatrist Sameer Parikh and Rachna Singh will be counselling employees in small batches.

“The victims of attack are recovering from their injuries at home. Victims are under stress and trauma of surviving a near death experience,” a spokesman said.

“Doctors and experts have referred to this as a post-traumatic stress syndrome which can haunt survivors for lifetime. Post-traumatic stress is an anxiety disorder that people may suffer after witnessing or experiencing a life threatening experience,” he added.

“The healing for such illnesses is a slow process. One of the immediate steps in the treatment for such victims is that they talk about their experiences to a professional,” said a specialist.

The Maruti violence rocked the Manesar facility July 18, killing general manager Awanish Kumar Dev, and injuring nearly 100 managers and supervisors.

Following the violence, the company declared a lock-out July 21.
