Shillong : Two militants, including the military wing chief of the Achik National United Front (ANUF), were Tuesday killed in a gunfight with security forces in Meghalaya, police said.

Five others were arrested following the battle in the western part of Meghalaya.

The fighting broke out in Rari village when the militants fired at the security forces who were tracking them, state police chief N. Ramchandran told IANS.

Waitson Sangma, the military wing chief of the two-month-old outfit, and his bodyguard were killed, Ramachandran said.

Rari village is in Meghalaya’s North Garo Hill district, about 300 km west of Shillong.

An AK rifle and one revolver and several incriminating documents were recovered from the site.

Ramachandran said the group had been kidnapping businessmen for ransom.
