Dubai : India’s 66th Independence Day was celebrated Wednesday in Kuwait by the Indian community.

The Independence Day was celebrated at the Indian embassy premises where the national flag was unfurled by Ambassador Satish C. Mehta.

Patriotic songs were sung by members of the Indian community to mark the occasion, said a press communique.

Despite the hot weather, a large number of Indians turned up for the open-air function.

Kuwait is a major supplier of oil and oil products to India and is the second largest source of fuel in the Gulf after Saudi Arabia. According to the Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior, there are approximately 640,000 Indians, who constitute the largest expatriate community in the country.

Two daily English newspapers brought out special supplements to mark India’s Independence Day.
