UN observers leave Syria

By IANS,

Damascus : A total of 23 international observers under the UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) Monday headed to Lebanese capital Beirut as their mission officially expired Sunday, Xinhua reported.

On Sunday, six observers left Syria. The exact figure of the remaining observers is not accurately known but is estimated to be 90.

The UN observer mission began in Syria in April.

Last week, the UN did not extend the mandate of the UNSMIS, and instead agreed to establish a civilian office in the capital Damascus.

The UN Security Council also appointed Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi as the new special envoy to Syria, replacing Kofi Annan.
