Arun Gawli, 11 others convicted for Sena leader’s murder

By IANS,

Mumbai : A Mumbai special court Friday found mafia don-turned-politician Arun Gawli and 11 others guilty of killing Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar here, an official said.

The Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) Special Court will pronounce the sentence in the case Monday, the official said.

The special court acquitted three others who were accused in the same case for lack of evidence. One more accused, Bala Surve, died last month.

Jamsandekar, a prominent Sena leader from Ghatkopar, was shot dead in March 2008 outside his Asalpha residence.

Two months later, on May 21, Gawli was arrested in connection with the killing and has remained in custody since then.

Later, Gawli and other accused were charged under the stringent MCOCA and Indian Penal Code Sections 302 (grievous hurt), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), and 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) by the police in Oct 2010.

The police contended that the contract to kill Jamsandekar was given by Bala Surve (now dead) and Sahebrao Bhintale who had a business and political rivalry with the Sena leader.

The police also contended that Jamsandekar was eliminated as he refused to cooperate with Surve and Bhintale in getting hold of a prime plot in Saki Naka, in the north-western suburbs.

The prosecution also contended that Jamsandekar was killed at Gawli’s behest for a sum of Rs.30 lakh. Gawli had taken the contract and the other co-accused had conspired in the murder case, it added.
