New Delhi : As a measure for reforms in the power sector, a task force will look into amending the Electricity Act, 2003, Power Minister Veerappa Moily announced Wednesday.
The task force, to be headed by the chairman of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), will give its report within two months.
Moily met on Wednesday with state electricity regulatory authorities to discuss proposed amendments in the Electricity Act that seek to give more autonomy to regulators in light of challenges arising out of the present economic context and the changing needs of the power sector.
The power sector has been in focus after India’s worst power outage last month.
On the eve of the meeting with regulators, Moily had said, “If you want 10 per cent growth, you need 9 per cent growth in the power sector and that is why we need a strong and enlightened regulator.”
The power ministry has also called for a meeting of power generation companies on Aug 31.
