Upgrade sewage system, water use for agriculture: Experts

By IANS,

Kolkata: Leading corporates, business research firms and science activists Friday called for an overhaul and upgradation of the sewage system and use of modern technology in agriculture for efficient use of the country’s water resources.

“Industries are shutting down due to water shortage. People consume excessive amounts of water. Lack of use of modern technologies causes loss of water in the agricultural sector,” said Pinaky Bhadury, vice president, Strategy Consulting (South Asia, Middle East & North Africa), Frost and Sullivan.

Centre for Science and Environment Director General Sunita Narain said while water was earlier used primarily for agriculture, “today it is needed for increasing urbanisation and industrialisation as well”.

“An overhaul and upgradation of the sewage system is required for the efficient use of water,” Narain said while addressing the annual Environment and Energy Conclave organised by the Bengal Chamber.

Coal India Chairman-cum-Managing Director S. Narsing Rao said a population of around one billion in the world has been hit due to water pollution.

The theme for the conclave was “Water Forum: Conserving Energy. Preserving Environment. Towards Tomorrow.”
