UP Assembly remembers Gujral’s simplicity

Lucknow : The Uttar Pradesh assembly Tuesday paid glowing tributes to former prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral, recalling his simplicity and love for the common man as well as efforts to better relations with Pakistan.

Shedding light on his multi-faceted personality, Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey said the late leader always worked for the uplift of the poor, weaker and the downtrodden.

Leader of the House and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, while paying his condolences, said Gujral had scaled political heights to become the prime minister of India. Gujral, he pointed out, was well read and knew many languages other than being an expert on foreign policy.

He further said Gujral not only authored a doctrine to better relations between Pakistan and India but also tried his best to see that there was a thaw in the two’s relations.

In his death, the nation has a lost an illustrious and a simple living leader, the chief minister added.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leaders also paid their tributes to the late leader.

Gujral was India’s 12th prime minister, holding office between April 1997 and March 1998. He passed away Nov 30, three days before his 93rd birthday.
