New Delhi : The central government Wednesday said it was committed to promoting the culture of northeastern India with financial aid under various development schemes that provide money to professional groups and private exponents of culture.

The government schemes include the Central Functions Grants Scheme and the Financial Assistance to Professional Groups and Individuals Engaged for Specified Performing Arts Project.

In a reply to a query in the Lok Sabha, union Culture Minister Chandresh Kumari Katoch said: “Ten percent of the total allocation of the annual plan of the ministry is earmarked for the development of art and culture of the northeast.”

Besides the special grants, the seven sub-zonal cultural centres promote and disseminate traditional folk art as well.
