AMU wins north zone intervarsity cricket tournament

Aligarh: With the help of a brilliant 132 runs by Taha Ali and 5 wicket haul by Meraj Ali, the host Aligarh Muslim University won the North Zone Intervarsity cricket Tournament by defeating Jamia Millia Islamia with a large margin of 388 runs here today.

The man of the match award was given to Rohit Saini while best bowler of the tournament was given to Meraj Ahmad, best batsman to Abhinav Kataria, man of the series to Rohit Saini (all from AMU) and best fielder to Amit Verma of Jamia Millia Islamia.

Addressing the distribution giving ceremony, the AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah congratulated the winner and runner teams of the tournament. He said that he has put a plan on anvil to revive the leading status of the University in games and sports. He said AMU had been a centre of excellence in sports in past and his administration had taken it on priority to encourage the students to take part in sports activities in large number and bring laurels to the University. Gen. Shah announced that all the AMU players of the cricket tournament will be provided with air ticket to participate in the All India Intervarsity Cricket Tournament.

Speaking as the Chief Guest on this occasion, former India Hockey captain, olympian and an alumnus of the university, Zafar Iqbal said that universities of the country are the cradles for building up sports talents in different disciplines of sports and we cannot afford to neglect sports persons at the university level if we wish to become a major player on the international scene of sports.

Iqbal called upon the Indian universities to draw up a fresh action plan for encouraging sports persons at the college level to help India “emerge as a major sports power in the world.”

Gen. Shah and DIG, Aligarh Zone, Mr. Prakash D. gave away the winner’s trophy to the AMU team while Olympian Zafar Iqbal and the Pro-Vice Chancellor of AMU, Brigadier (Retd.) S. Ahmad Ali honoured the Jamia Millia team with the runner’s trophy.

Earlier, welcoming the guests and thanking the participating teams, the Secretary, University Games Committee, Prof. Tariq Mansoor, said that both the winner and runner teams have done their institutions proud. He expressed hope that the present crop of cricketers at AMU will shine for their respective teams and will make way to the Vizzy Trophy, Ranji Trophy and hopefully National Team.

Prof. Mansoor also expressed happiness on the achievement of AMU team winning the North Zone Intervarsity Women’s Badminton Tournament.

A souvenir was also released on this occasion by the Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah and Chief Guest Mr. Zafar Iqbal. Dr. Mohammad Shoeb Zaheer and Dr. Moinuddin have jointly edited the souvenir. Dr. Amjad Ali, President, University Cricket Club conducted the programme.

A large number of students, faculty members and cricket lovers attended the prize distribution ceremony of the North Zone Intervarsity Cricket Tournament.

First Inning: Aligarh Muslim University scored 267 runs (Rohit Saini 97, Abhinav Kataria 64, Mayank V. 3 for 59) versus Jamia Millia Islamia scored 77 runs (Shivendra Paul 18, Mohd. Mansoor 5 for 22).

Second Inning: Aligarh Muslim University scored 267 runs (Taha Ali 132, Surendra Dahia 5 for 50) versus Jamia Millia Islamia scored 70 (Shivendra Paul 17, Meraj Ahmad 5 for 21, Mohd. Mansoor 4 for 31).
