New Delhi : An excise inspector and his associate were arrested for impersonating as service tax officials in order to cheat wedding venue owners in the capital, police said Monday.
Parmod Kumar Gupta, an inspector with the central excise and customs department in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut division, and his associate Abhishek Rai, were arrested from the city’s Mundka area Sunday for cheating over a dozen people.
Police said that both Gupta and Rai went to a motel on Rohtak Road in central Delhi and demanded money from the manager after introducing themselves as service tax officials.
“The manager, however, grew suspicious. He contacted police and the accused were arrested with Rs.94,000 they had collected from other people,” Additional Commissioner of Police V. Renganathan said.
