Kolkata: A middle aged, unknown woman was beaten to death by an irate mob, which had gathered near GJ Khan Road of Topsia (Kolkata) at around 8.00pm last night, allegedly because she has been trying to kidnap children by offering them candy.
She was labelled a member of the child lifting gang, and brutally beaten to death.
Advocate S.KhurshidAlam, co-ordinator of Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) chapter of Kolkata, whose chamber is nearby reached the spot and immediately called the local police station.
Over 500 people had gathered at the spot by the time police reached. After dispersing the crowd, the body was sent for medical examination.
For the last few weeks some children from the Topsia locality have been reported missing. APCR’s fact finding team had visited some of the parents of the missing children on December 23, 2012 and all the parents had complained about the indifferent attitude of the police towards their case.
Yesterday’s incident was the consequence of what rights activists call“insensitiveness of the police towards the case of missing children.”
There are reports of at least four children missing, of whom dead body of one has been found. However, rumor mills put the figure to somewhere above 10. There are also rumors that organ racketeers maybe behind the cases of missing children.
Speaking to TCN, KhurshidAlam of APCR condemned the incident. He said, “It is a matter of shame for the people of the locality that in Kangaroo court fashion a mob kills a lady without any evidence, making a mockery of the legal system.”
APCR has also demanded the police to be more vigilant and bring the real culprits to justice.
