Update Delhi gurdwara poll voters’ list, says court

By IANS,

New Delhi : Ahead of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) elections next month, the Delhi High Court Tuesday told the Delhi government to update within a month the electoral rolls, with photographs of voters.

Justice Vipin Sanghi also ordered the directorate of gurdwara election (DGE) to complete the exercise of delimitation in 46 wards.

The court’s order came on a petition filed by Harmohan Singh, an aspiring poll contestant. He alleged that the directorate had virtually announced the schedule for the election but the notification was yet to be issued.

The election would be held March 11 and the filing of nomination papers by candidates would start Feb 16, he said.

The petition said: “The election of DSGMC on the basis of incomplete list of voters and without delimitation of wards will cause unfair representation of the members from each ward.”

“A number of duplicate voters have been mentioned in the list and non-Sikh persons also figure in the voters’ list,” the petitioner said.

The petitioner claimed that some members of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) had met Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna and briefed him about the situation in October last year.

Khanna assured them that he would look into the issue before the election, the petition said.
