Gurgaon : Home Minister P. Chidambaram Wednesday inaugurated a dedicated intelligence cell of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), a development expected to boost its intelligence gathering abilities.
Lauding the role of the CRPF in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast, Chidambaram said intelligence gathering played a “very important” role in combating Maoism and other forms of insurgency.
Speaking at Kadarpur here, Chidambaram said the CRPF’s new expanded set-up was meant to collect specific inputs relating to its counter-insurgency and anti-Maoist operations.
CRPF Director General K. Vijay Kumar said: “With the establishment of CRPF Intelligence School, the force now will have its own integrated intelligence set-up right from directorate to unit level. It will help in the vertical and seamless flow of intelligence.”
The CRPF has always had an intelligence unit but it lacked adequate manpower.
A faculty drawn from the Intelligence Bureau, Research and Analysis Wing, Military Intelligence and the Central Bureau of Investigation will train the CRPF personnel in intelligence gathering.
The home ministry has sanctioned 468 posts for the new expanded unit, from constables to commandants.
