Chinese urban women contribute one-third to family income

Beijing: Chinese women in urban areas on an average contribute about one-third to their family income, a survey has found.

According to the “Blue Paper on Women’s Lives”, the women’s survey in China’s 10 cities found women making up an average of 35.8 percent of their family incomes, Xinhua reported.

The blue paper was jointly compiled by Women of China, a magazine run by the All-China Women’s Federation, Huakun Women’s Life Survey Centre and Huakun Women’s Consumption Guidance Centre.

The survey was carried out in 10,000 households in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Taiyuan, Changsha, Dalian, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Ningbo and Harbin.

The average monthly income of the surveyed women amounts to about 4,900 yuan (around $800).

The women of Guangzhou, the capital city of south Guangdong province, stood on top, with an average monthly salary of 11,200 yuan, while those from Lanzhou, the capital city of northwest Gansu province, ranked the lowest, with 2,733 yuan per month on average.

The survey also found that they work an average of 8.4 hours per day.

Moreover, 85.3 percent of the women surveyed said they faced pressure at work, and 33.6 percent felt “fair or very grave work pressure.”

The survey also found the sources of their stress stem from their workplaces, including compensation below their expectations, fierce competition, high workload and difficulties in striking a balance between work and life.
