Low traffic fines no longer a deterrent: Delhi Police

By IANS,

New Delhi : Delhi Police officials Tuesday called for an increase in fines levied for traffic violations, pointing out that low fines were no longer a deterrent.

“The penalties set by the 1988 Motor Vehicle Act are outdated,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg at a conference on road safety here.

“This year, we fined some eight lakh drivers for jumping the red light. But the fines which were established some 20 year ago no longer prove to be a deterrent for errant motorists,” added Garg.

The officer said there was an urgent need to update fines which would give the traffic police some teeth.
