New Delhi : The capital witnessed 1,127 cases of drug pedalling in 2011 — an increase of five percent over last year, police said Friday.
“While 1,127 cases were registered, 1,285 people were arrested in connection with drug peddling,” Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta said at the annual press conference here Friday.
“To tackle the menace of drugs, it is necessary to register more cases as it will lead to more arrests,” he added.
There was also an increase in the quantity of smack, heroin, opium and marijuana recovered in 2011.
According to Gupta, all the beat constables of every police station of every district have been instructed to keep a vigil in their area to make it drug free.
“There will be zero tolerance towards drugs related crimes and the beat constables will have to face official inquiry if they are not found doing enough on this serious issue,” he said.
