Yasin Malik arrested in Srinagar

Srinagar : Yasin Malik, chief of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), was arrested here Friday after he tried to take out a march to protest a student’s killing in the CISF firing earlier this week.

After the day’s Friday prayers, Malik along with dozens of JKLF activists started a march towards the city centre Lal Chowk shouting slogans and carrying banners against the killing of 18-year-old Altaf Ahmad Sood in firing by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at Boniyar, about 90 km from here, during villagers’ protest against power cuts.

“Kashmir is such a place where the army issues political statements every second day. I want to ask the prime minister and the chief minister whether the state is run by them or the army,” Malik said at the protest march, four days after Sood was killed in the CISF firing Monday.

Police intercepted the march at Badshah Chowk, a short distance from where it started in JKLF stronghold of Maisuma locality.

“Malik and five of his supporters have been taken into preventive custody as they attempted to violate section 144 of the criminal procedure code,” a senior police officer said here. Under the section, an assembly of five or more persons is banned and deemed illegal.

Malik and his five detained supporters were taken to the nearby Kothi Bagh police station.
