New Delhi: Two more doctors have been apprehended for involvement in the leaking of the AIIMS post-graduate medical entrance test papers Sunday. They had reportedly stuck a deal to pay Rs.18 lakh each if they passed the exam, police said Friday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ashok Chand said the arrests were made from Rajinder Nagar area in central Delhi Thursday following investigations following the arrest of five people Sunday.
Sai Balender Bakshi (35) and Vimal Dangi (31) were apprehended as they had also appeared in the examination Sunday and had taken the help of the racket.
According to Chand, Bakshi and Dangi had come in contact with a doctor doing post- graduation in a medical college in Indore where Mohit Choudhary, 23, the mastermind of the gang, was also doing his MBBS course. The doctor told them that Chaudhary could help them clear the PG entrance test.
“They contacted Chaudhary in the first week of January and a deal was struck in which Chaudhary told them that if they qualified, they would have to pay Rs.18 lakh each. In order to ensure that they did not default on the payment, Chaudhary kept with him all the original certificates of both the doctors,” said Ashok Chand, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime).
They met Chaudhary in a hotel in Paharganj. Chaudhary allegedly gave them shirts with bluetooth stitched on them, a minute earphone, and a SIM card. The mobile phones to be used by the doctors were procured by both the doctors from a shop in Connaught Place by using their respective debit cards.
Dangi hails from Udaipur and did his MBBS from Ukraine. In 2009, he worked as a Clinical Researcher in a private hospital in Delhi and a year later, he joined another government hospital as Research Officer and till date he is employed there.
Bakshi, who hails from Jamshedpur, did his MBBS from Karnataka. “From 2009 to 2011 he tried to get into post-graduate medical courses but could not succeed. He then joined a private sector company in Noida as a research medical officer and till date he was working there,” Chand said.
The accused were brought before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Amit Bansal, who remanded them to police custody till Jan 17, the day when remand of the other five accused involved in the case will get over.
Magistrate Bansal allowed the custodial interrogation of the accused after the police submitted that their custody would be required to unearth the conspiracy and confront them with the evidence.
The total arrested in the case is seven. The other five were arrested from Delhi and Noida Sunday.
Those arrested include Choudhary, a second year MBBS student, Kapil Kumar, 27, MBA graduate from Jamia Milia and Krishan Pratap Singh, 27, MA in public administration from Jamia Milia and MBA from IMT Meerut, Bhishma Singh, 27, who was operating the computers in a rented accommodation in Noida, and Amit Punia, who did his MBBS from PGI Rohtak.
Punia appeared in the exam along with the two MBA students posing as medical students. “Choudhary was caught red handed with photo copies of the entrance test papers Sunday near Pragati Maidan in the capital, Bhishma was apprehended from Noida from a computer operating room while the other three were arrested from sector-2, Noida from the examination centre,” said Chand.
“The gang used high-end mobile phones Sony Xperia and Nokia Lumia to scan the question paper. Using blue tooth and earphones, the scanned copy of the papers were sent to an email id. One of the gang members Bhishma Singh, who was working in a computer operating room in Noida, provided a photocopy of the papers to Choudhary,” the police official said.
The all-India post graduate medical entrance examination was conducted by AIIMS around 10 a.m. Sunday for filling the 50 percent post graduate seats in government colleges across the country.
The exam was conducted at 156 centres and 70,000 candidates appeared for the exam.
