New Delhi : Ahead of Team Anna’s indefinite fast from July 25 for a strong anti-corruption law, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government Tuesday said it is committed to passing the Lokpal bill provided it is according to the wishes of parliament.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office V. Narayanasamy in a letter to social activist Anna Hazare said the government wanted that the anti-corruption law be made based on the parliament’s view on the demands of Team Anna.
“We are committed to passing the Lokpal bill and it was passed in the Lok Sabha but we don’t have the numbers to get it through the Rajya Sabha,” he said.
Team Anna have been demanding that the Central Bureau of Investigation be made independent and the proposed anti-corruption body decentralised.
Team Anna will be holding an indefinite fast in the national capital from July 25 and have also announced support to a protest being held by yoga guru Baba Ramdev Aug 9.
