New Delhi : A 27-year-old youth was arrested here for cheating a retired labour ministry employee of Rs.92,000 on the pretext of providing him a bank loan, police said Thursday.

Amit Raj, resident of east Delhi’s Nand Nagri, was apprehended from his residence Wednesday for cheating 65-year-old Bhagwan in September last year.

Additional Commissioner of Police V. Renganathan said: “For personal requirement, Bhagwan was looking for a loan from a bank or any other financial institution. On Sep 6, 2011 he received a call from a youth who promised him loan.”

Renganathan said that Amit allegedly took five blank crossed cheques from Bhagwan, resident of west Delhi’s Nangloi.

“A few days later, Bhagwan came to know that Rs.92,000 had been withdrawn from his account by using one of the cheques he had given to the accused,” said the official.

During interrogation, Raj told police that he had worked with one Hukam Chand who was working for HDFC bank and became master in handling the banking procedure.

“He used to make a number of calls to different numbers at random. After talking to Bhagwan, he came to know that he was a suitable victim,” said the official.
