Two months jail for Andhra minister

By IANS,

Hyderabad : A special court here Wednesday sentenced a cabinet minister in Andhra Pradesh to two months’ simple imprisonment for alleged violation of the foreign exchange regulation law.

The special court for economic offences, however, also granted bail to the Secondary Education Minister K. Parthasarathy. It gave him a month’s time to appeal against the verdict in a higher court.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs.5.15 lakh on the minister.

Earlier, the court found the minister guilty of violating the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act when he was the managing director of Hyderabad-based KPR Teleproducts Limited.

The Enforcement Directorate registered a case against Parthasarathy in 2001 and imposed a penalty of Rs.3 lakh. He, however, failed to pay the penalty. The ED had complained to the court about the minister’s non-cooperation in the probe.
