Umsaw (Meghalaya) : Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh Friday exuded confidence that the Myanmar would act against Indian rebels operating in that country.
“In the aftermath of our prime minister’s visit to Myanmar, we are confident that they will act against the Indian rebels operating from inside that country,” he told journalists after chairing a board meeting of the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) here.
Manmohan Singh – the first Indian prime minister to visit Myanmar in 25 years – Tuesday ended a three-day visit, during which he met Myanmar President Thein Sein and democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi. The two countries inked a dozen agreements.
The home secretary also said the government would soon hold another round of discussions with the pro-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).
“We are already in dialogue with the ULFA. We have had two rounds of talks with them. Our interlocutor P.C. Haldar is doing a follow up on different details, and it is time for me to fix a date for another round at my level,” he said.
Asked whether the government would also rope in Paresh Barua, the elusive commander-in-chief of the ULFA anti-talk faction, the home secretary said, “The ULFA anti-talk faction is a small rump faction and insignificant. We will go without him absolutely.”
He said the security scenario in the whole northeast region had improved in the past two-three years.
India and Myanmar share a 1,640-km long unfenced border, allowing militants from the northeast to use the adjoining country as a springboard to carry out hit-and-run guerrilla strikes on Indian soldiers.
