Mathura riot: CM steps in, violence almost controlled

New Delhi: For full 8 hours, mobs of the majority community allegedly ran on rampage in the Kosikalan village about 40 kms from Mathura district headquarters. Initial news reports said one person was killed in the violence but an eyewitness said at least five persons, all youths from the minority community were killed, and dozens wounded. This is yet to be confirmed officially.

Talking to TCN over phone, social activist Maqsood Ahmed said at least 25 houses were burnt and 12 shops were looted and burnt. He informed the office of chief minister Akhilesh Yadav about gravity of the situation. The CM stepped in and within one hour the violence was almost controlled.

Maqsood alleged that local police remained mute spectators for several hours when the mobs were on rampage.

According to him, the cause of the violence was not one reported in the media. He said when people were doing abulation near the local mosque for Juma Prayer, a Hindu boy began urinating near the water pot from where Namazis were taking water. The people snubbed him or may be beat him, he returned to his village and very soon, hundreds came up in lorries and when people were offering prayer in the mosque, they started throwing stones on them in the mosque, they also started beating them with lathis.

Maqsood who lives in Mathura town got information about the incident and reached the spot by 4 pm.

He said the situation is very tense, members of the minority community are very terrified. However, violence has been controlled. Higher officers of the district administration are camping at the site.
