Poor Muslim students now shine in Class X exam in West Bengal

Kolkata: Leaving behind all odds at home, several poor Muslim students have secured distinct positions in the results of Class X (Madhyamik i.e. Secondary Standard Examination 2012), the results of which were announced on 29th May. The students of various Muslim-run residential missionary schools like Al-Ameen Mission, Sishu Bikash Academy, Mamoon National School, Guidance Academy, Maulana Azad Academy, GD Academy, Frontpage Academy have also shown good performance. There are nearly 50 residential schools set up since 1980 in West Bengal in different districts. All of them follow the State School Board Curriculum, not Madrasa Syllabus.

Sirajul Haque, a Hafiz, has secured 651 marks out of 700, getting 93%. He comes from a remote place at Kashimnagar of Murarai area of Birbhum district. He studied for Madhyamik examination at a residential Muslim school Mamoon National School at Memari of Burdwan district. His father Mershad Munshi is a weaver by profession at his home. He makes Gamcha (towel), Saree etc with a manual handloom. Mother Rahaman Bibi is a housewife. Siraj has five brothers and two sisters. His science Graduate brother Shafiqul Islam also engaged in handloom work with his father. His father’s dream was to make Siraj a Hafiz, which he became when he was reading in Class VI from Kashim Nagar Jumma Masjid. Then he went to Madrasa Darool Uloom in Mau district of Uttar Pradesh. He revised his Hifz from that Madrasa and came back to home. Then Secretary of Mamoon National School Mr Kazi Md Yasin inspired him to read again in formal education. He offered him all support and got him admitted in Class VIII of his school with all educational and residential support.

Mr Yasin told TCN that, every day Siraj recited Ayat from Holy Quran in the morning to the other students and inspired them to learn Quran more. Now Mamoon School is so happy to find their students at good positions in Madhyamik Examination. Sijaj wants to become a doctor in future, but right now he is thinking about admission in Class XI.

Raihanuddin Mondal, son of an Imam of a mosque of West Bajikpur under Nadia district secured 637 numbers, 91%. Raihan’s father doesn’t have any land. He depends on small salary of Imam and earns some money by attending Milad-Mehfil to deliver speech. Raihan got educational support from Al-Ameen Mission of their Belpukur Campus of South Dinajpur District.

Badesh Mondal has got 581 marks, 83% in aggregate. His family lives in a small hut in the field of jute. Electricity has not yet reached his home. Kerosene lamp is the main source of light at night. At times, his family has faced starvation. He got study support from residential campus of Al-Ameen Mission at Beldanga campus, Murshidabad. He dreams to be an engineer in future.

Md Atiur Rahman, son of a daily wager, has secured 605 marks. His village Ramnagar is in a remote place of North Dinajpur District. His landless father depends on wages from agricultural field in his village.
Son of a mason Imran Sheikh got 634 marks. He is residing at Dhuliyan of Murshidabad District. Rafiqul Alam Mistri, son of a mentally disabled father of Kushmor village of Birbhum district got 635 marks.

Farhin Sabnam, daughter of small farmer of Village Bahirkhanda of Birdwan district secured 640 marks. Afrina Begum of Village Shibnagar of Murshidabad district secured 578. Her father is also a daily wager. Syed Sabnam Farah of Dhuliyan of Murshidabad also got good marks, 649.

These poor but meritorious students have got help and study-support from Muslim-run missionary residential schools in West Bengal. This has inspired the community to open such schools in other districts as well.

In all 10,05,414 students had appeared in the Secondary Examination this year. In the top 200 successful students there are many Muslims. At No. 4 is Shahin Isha. He told TCN that he wants to be a cardiac surgeon. He is student of Berachampa Deulia High School of North 24 Parganas. His father Rafiqul Islam is a mathematics teacher of Haroa PG high School in the same district. Shahin secured 672 marks out of 700, 96% in aggregate. He is just four marks behind the topper. Shahin got above 90 marks in all subjects. He got 100 mark in Mathematics, Bengali-93, English-93, Physical Science-99, Life Science-99, History-95 and Geography-93.

Two other students, Muhammad Sagir of Bohar High School and Monalisa Khatun of Meral Satishchandra Public Institution of Burdwan, both secured 666 marks and stood rank 24th.

Muslim inmates of Correctional Home (Prison) in the State have also got good marks. Among the inmates of Presidency Jail Rashid Alam secured 421, first division and second position also goes to a Muslim inmate Milan Sheik who secured 311 only. Sani Sheikh of Baharampur Jail of Murshidabad secured 521 numbers and he is topper in that jail. In the Alipore women jail two Muslim inmates have passed the Secondary examination, they are Banoo Ansari (299) and Sultana Khan (298).
