Pakistan frees 311 Indian prisoners

By IAMS,

Islamabad: Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh’s fate may have plunged into further uncertainity, but India still has some reason to cheer. Pakistan Wednesday freed 311 Indian fishermen from prison.

Officials of Karachi’s District Malir jail said, 311 Indian prisoners were released at 8 a.m. after completing their sentences.

They were sent to Wagah border where they will be handed over to Indian authorities, Geo TV reported.

The prisoners, include 21 juveniles, lodged in Youthful Offenders’ School in Karachi. The adult prisoners were held at Malir jail.

A total of 127 Indian prisoners still remain in Malir jail.

India Wednesday renewed its request to Pakistan to release Sarabjit.

On Tuesday, the Pakistani media had carried reports of Sarabjit getting a presidential pardon. However, Islamabad clarified that it was not Sarabjit but Surjeet Singh, his fellow inmate at Kot Lakhpat jail, who would be released.

Sarabjit has been in custody for over two decades and is serving a death sentence for his alleged involvement in a string of blasts in the Punjab province in 1990.
