Youth’s hands chopped off for not repaying loan

By IANS,

Patna : Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Friday ordered a probe into a gruesome incident when a young man’s hands were chopped after he failed to repay a loan of Rs.300.

The chief minister pledged that the killers won’t be spared. “I have asked police headquarters to inquire into it,” he said.

Narrating his tale of horror, Ram Sagar Chandravanshi, 20, said he owed Rs.300 to a powerful man in Kodra village of Arwal district, about 70 km from here.

“When I requested him to give me more time to repay the loan, they ordered me to work for a couple of contractors in lieu of the money.

“When I refused, they first thrashed me and attacked my hands with an axe, cutting them off,” he said.

When the victim fell unconscious, he was dumped in a field.

Chandravanshi is now worried about sustaining himself.

“How I will earn my livelihood as my hands have been chopped off? There is little hope for proper treatment at this government hospital. My fate is now at the mercy of God,” he lamented.

His family members told IANS that police had not taken any action.

“No arrest has been made, the accused are roaming freely and threatening our family members to withdraw the case. Police will not help poor people like us,” Chandravanshi’s newly-wedded wife Buchchi Devi said.

Ram Bali Singh, convener of the Chandravanshi Struggle Committee, said he was shocked that police initially did not even want to register a complaint.

Deputy Inspector General (Magadh range) N.H. Khan said he will order police to record Chandravanshi’s statement and investigate the case.
