Celebrations at BJP office in Goa

By IANS,

Panaji : Celebrations were on at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s office here Tuesday as the party along with its alliance partner, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), won majority in the 40-member state assembly.

“We have prepared a time-bound agenda which we have promised in our election manifesto and we are going to implement it. Petrol as promised will be sold at Rs.55 in Goa immediately after the budget,” BJP leader and hot favourite for chief minister Manohar Parrikar told IANS.

At the party headquarters, where the newly elected legislators were scheduled to gather, workers are already celebrating victory by lighting fire crackers and throwing colour on each other.

“This is our Holi before time. We are looking at the BJP itself getting a majority on its own. It has never happened in Goa before,” said Ramesh Naik, a party worker.

The rival Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) alliance ranks a poor second at eight seats, with the NCP unable to even open its account these elections.

Poll officials said the results for three seats Taleigao, Saligao and Siolim are being collated.

The BJP had, as of 3 p.m., won 19 seats, while the MGP has netted three.

The Goa Vikas Party (GVP) has won two seats, while four independents have also won.

Goa voted March 3.
