Panaji : Two former Goa chief ministers of the Congress were among the key losers along with six sitting cabinet ministers of the party-led government, as results for the March 3 assembly poll were declared Tuesday.
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and former chief minister and ex-speaker Pratapsing Rane were the key winners for the Congress.
Among the key Congress candidates to lose the polls were Home Minister Ravi Naik (Ponda) and Public Works Department Minister Churchill Alemao (Navelim), both former chief ministers.
The list of defeated nominees included Power Minister Aleixo Sequeira (Nuvem), Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao (Cuncolim), Forest Minister Filipe Neri (Velim) and Babu Azgaonkar (Pernem), all from the Congress.
The two Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ministers, Jose Philip D’Souza (Vasco) and Nilkanth Halarnkar (Thivim), have lost the polls.
Scions of the mining baron Anil Salgaonkar, Arjun (Sanvordem), who contested as an independent, and Sameer (Mandrem), who contested on a Trinamool Congress ticket, also lost to their respective Bharatiya Janata Party rivals.
The NCP, which had three legislators in the 11th state legislative assembly, failed to open its account. The Trinamool Congress (TC), making its electoral debut in Goa, also failed to open its account despite contesting 20-plus seats.
The BJP, along with its alliance partner Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, has won majority in the 40-member state assembly.
