Mumbai : Stating that there is some mismatch between the skills that youth possess and the talents needed in the country, President Pratibha Patil Tuesday called for an urgent need to correct this to reverse the low employability ratio of higher education graduates.
Speaking at the Platinum Jubilee function of the Ramnarain Ruia College in Mumbai, Patil said: “We will only be able to reap a demographic dividend, if our younger generation has the education and skills to meet the economic and intellectual requirements of the nation.”
Patil said there is a massive demand in the country for skilled workforce in a range of sectors, whether it is Information Technology, infrastructure, tourism, media or healthcare.
“Educational institutions should constantly upgrade their training methodologies and curriculum,” she emphasised.
Earlier Tuesday, Patil inaugurated the D-Magics exhibition at the Welingkar Institute of Management, Development & Research – WE School, adjacent to the Ruia College.
D-Magics showcases innovative concepts developed by the students of the Institute, which not only cover new products, but also new ways of using resources or putting in place new working systems and services that are more productive and efficient.
Patil commended the contributions of Ruia College and WE School in converting thoughts into action by offering practical innovative and technology driven programmes saying “this is perhaps, an indication of the approach required in our country”.
The Ruia College Platinum Jubilee function was attended by the Governor of Maharashtra, K. Sankaranarayana, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar and Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly Dilip Walse Patil, amongst others.
