Ukrainian, two Israelis get life term in Egypt

Cairo : Two Israelis and a Ukrainian were Tuesday sentenced to life terms in prison by an Egyptian court for smuggling arms into the country.

The three were convicted of smuggling weapons from Israel through the Taba border crossing. They were arrested last October.

Ukrainian Eduard Bablovich and Israeli Muad Zahalka were sentenced by the Ismailia criminal court.

The third defendant, Mamoun Abdel Fatah Elalimi, who is currently in Israel, was convicted in absentia, Al Ahram newspaper reported.

A German and an Austrian are also facing trial in Egypt on charges of smuggling weapons.
