AMU renames its polytechnics

By TCN News,

Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University has decided to rename its two polytechnics. University Polytechnic and Women’s Polytechnic will now be known as University Technological Institute (Boys) and University Technological Institute (Girls). Exercising powers vested in him under Section 19 (3) of AMU Amendment Act, 1981 on behalf of Academic Council, Executive Council and AMU Court, the AMU Vice Chancellor has approved the proposal to rename AMU polytechnics.

Both institutes will be headed by separate Directors. The Director, University Technological Institute (Boys) and Director, University Technological Institute (Girls) shall be appointed in order of seniority in their respective Institute in analogy to Chairman, Department of Studies.

AMU Registrar, Dr. Nazim Husain Jafri said that the above amendments shall be made in the Statutes of the University including the replacement of “Principal, University Polytechnic” with “Director, University Technological Institute (Boys)” and “Principal, Women’s Polytechnic” with “Director, University Technological Institute (Girls)” wherever these terminologies occur. The Principals of both the Polytechnics shall continue in their positions and shall function in analogy to Principal, Zakir Husain College of Engineering & Technology.

Dr. Jafri said that the “University Technological Institute” shall continue to run all existing programmes and admit students in the existing Diploma Engineering programmes at the University Polytechnic and the Women’s Polytechnic apart from other future programmes it deems fit to start but shall not duplicate any programme already available at the Z.H. College of Engineering & Technology. The Institute shall have different nomenclature of degrees from those being awarded at Z.H. College of Engineering & Technology.

The institute shall follow the exact model similar to the Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET), Longowal, Punjab for starting the technical degree programmes where students are admitted at various levels after completing their Secondary School Certificate (Class X) and Diploma Engineering Courses only.

The two institutes will be delinked from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology and shall be independent of the faculty directly under the Academic Council and each of them would have academic, financial and administrative freedom. Till such time the two institutes come into existence, the existing Polytechnics will continue to be under the present arrangement i.e. under the Faculty of Engineering & Technology. The degree programmes in Polytechnics shall commence only after the University Technological Institutes come into existence, said Dr. Rahat Abrar, Public Relations Officer, AMU.
