Congress to seek explanation from absent MPs

By IANS,

New Delhi : Relieved after defeating in the Rajya Sabha the opposition’s amendments on the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the Congress will seek an explanation from its members who were absent Tuesday.

Sources said the seven Congress members of the upper house would be asked to explain the reasons for their absence during the crucial voting on the motion of thanks to the president’s address.

A similar explanation would be sought from around 15 Lok Sabha members who were absent during the same debate Monday, said the sources.

The government won the day despite a lack of majority in the Rajya Sabha with help from the Samajwadi Party (SP), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and its mercurial ally Trinamool Congress, which stayed away from the house.

A shocked Congress had last year issued notices to 13 MPs who were absent in the Lok Sabha during the winter session last year when the government failed to get a constitutional status for the anti-graft ombudsman Lokpal.

Though the government managed to pass the Lokpal Bill in the Lok Sabha, the legislation could not be passed in the upper house, where the UPA lacks majority.
