Bengal government trying to choke voice of opposition: Left

By IANS,

Kolkata : West Bengal opposition leader Surjya Kanta Mishra Wednesday accused the Trinamool Congress-led state government of “trying to throttle” the voice of the opposition both inside and outside the assembly.

“They are trying to throttle the voice of the opposition. This cannot happen in democracy. When we were in power and they (Trinamool) were in opposition we never did such things. During their days in opposition too they used to create ruckus inside the assembly,” said Mishra while addressing reporters here.

“When our MLA Sushanta Ghosh was about to deliver his speech, the MLAs of the treasury bench deliberately created a ruckus so that Sushanta could not speak. This is most unfortunate,” said Mishra.

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader and former minister Sushanta Ghosh, who is facing murder charges in the Midnapore skeleton case, said the state “cannot choke the voice of the opposition”.

“When I was arrested last year, the CID officials tried their level best to mentally harass me but they failed. They had interrogated me at a stretch for 30 hours. The Trinamool is afraid that if they allow the opposition to speak we will criticize their wrong deeds. They should understand that this is democracy. The opposition has the right to raise its voice,” said Ghosh.
