100,000 people displaced in Pakistan this year

By IANS,

Geneva : Over 100,000 people, mostly women and children, have been displaced in northwest Pakistan this year due to military operations against the militant groups, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said.

UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said Friday an estimated 101,160 people have been displaced since Jan 20 in the Khyber Agency region.

Fleming said the recent increase in the intensity of the fighting was driving even larger numbers of families to flee the region to Jalozai camp, where the UNHCR and the World Food Program is providing them humanitarian aid.

The UNHCR has registered 1,721 families on Wednesday alone, and the average since March 17 has been nearly 2,000 families each day, Xinhua reported quoting the refugee agency.
