Kolkata : The new terminal of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, which is being constructed under the modernization plan of the airport, is scheduled to be operational by the first week of October.

“We are 97 percent complete for phase one. So we are completing the terminal physically by June. In the first week of September or October, it will be operational,” B.P. Sharma, Airport Director, Airport Authority of India, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, said at an interactive session organised by the Bharat Chamber of Chamber (BCC).

The modernisation of the airport was conceived in 2008 and Rs.2,525 crore was earmarked for the project under the 11th Five Year Plan.

According to Sharma, the airport, which now handles 10.38 million passengers per annum, has the capacity to grow up to handling 40 million passengers once the modernisation is completed.

Kolkata airport handles around 15 to 20 percent of the country’s total air traffic.

Sharma said the second development plan of the airport would start by 2017.

“The airport has a second development plan, which will start somewhere between 2016 and 2017, depending upon the growth of the airline industry,” he stated.
