Farmington, MI: The American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) has condoled the passing away of long time social worker and Gujarat Today group chairman Mr. Sirajuddin Tirmizi. He died Wednesday morning. He was 75.
“His self-less contributions to the community are numerous. As the chairman of Gujarat Today group he held high the banner of ethical journalism. During the dark days of the 2002 Gujarat riots his newspaper was a shining light in highlighting the atrocities while maintaining balance. As a fearless publisher he was not shy of criticising the powerful and carried on his work. His courage was legendary,” said Dr. A.R. Nakadar, Trustee of AFMI.
“The tragic passing of Sirajbhai Tirmizi, one of the founders of Gujarat ToDay and Lok Hit Charitable Trust marks a deeply sad moment for all,especially the Muslim community nationally and internationally,” said Dr. Nakadar.
“His voice of understanding and compassion for those in Gujarat and in India, who were afflicted with illiteracy, prejudices and injustices will miss him greatly.
He was a progressive individual who worked tirelessly in promoting socio economic emancipation of the community through quality education.He became champion of the masses through his constructive policies for eradication of illiteracy, human welfare and stood for social justice. ”
The American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin, is a North American based grassroots organization, dedicated to socio-economic and educational development of Muslims and other underprivileged masses in India.
