Lucknow: Three Peace Party legislators in Uttar Pradesh quit Saturday, accusing its leadership of hobnobbing with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Led by Akhilesh Singh, the national general secretary of the party who was elected from Rae Bareily, the trio accused national president Mohammad Ayub of working clsely with BJP leaders to “create communal unrest in the state”.
“We cannot be a party to any anti-people act and hence have decided to quit,” Akhilesh Singh said.
Informed sources said the legislators planned to join the ruling Samajwadi Party in the state.
Peace Party made a successful debut in Uttar Pradesh, winning four seats in the assembly polls this year.
Ayub won from Khalilabad, Kamal Yusuf Mallik from Doomariyaganj, Singh from Rae Bareli and Anees-ur-Rehman from Kanth.
With three of them quitting, Ayub is the sole legislator of Peace Party now.
