‘Bengal does not have strong civil society’

By IANS,

Kolkata : Noted historian Ramachandra Guha Wednesday blamed the communists as well as the Trinamool Congress for not allowing a strong civil society to grow in West Bengal.

“West Bengal does not have a strong civil society, and this is because the communists would not allow it. I further regret to say that the Trinamool Congress headed by Mamata Banerjee does not allow it either,” Guha said at the closing ceremony of the golden jubilee celebrations of Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta, his alma mater.

Guha also criticised the ruling Trinamool Congress for its failure to accept critical views.

“My only criticism of Trinamool Congress is their attitude of — if you are not with us, then you are against us,” Guha said, known for his books such as “India After Gandhi” and “Makers of Modern India”.

“Do not suppress civil society and do not think Writers’ Buildings (the state secretariat) knows all,” he said.
