Mexican airline buys 40 Airbus jets

By IANS/EFE,

Mexico City : Low-cost Mexican airline Interjet has signed a contract to buy 40 Airbus A320 Neo passenger jets for more than $3.2 billion.

The aircraft are the most profitable and ecological available in the industry, given that they incorporate the most advanced technology, said Interjet president Miguel Aleman, according to a communique from the European manufacturer.

The transaction strengthens the relationship with Interjet and confirms the trend in Latin America to opt for the most efficient aircraft in the world, said the director of Airbus’s client services, John Leahy.

Interjet will be one of the first airlines in the region to benefit from the Neo model, which has fuel savings of 15 percent, Leahy said.

The A320 Neo boasts more efficient engines along with improvements in aerodynamic design and features a “significant reduction of polluting gases (released) into the atmosphere”, Interjet emphasized.

The incorporation of the new aircraft, which will be added to the 35 A320 planes the airline already has, will allow Interjet “to continue operating one of the youngest and most efficient air fleets in Mexico and the world”.

Interjet, which was founded almost seven years ago, flies to more than 30 destinations in Mexico, the US and Central America.
