Kolkata : Three days after a man was killed in police firing in Tehatta in West Bengal, union minister and Congress MP Deepa Dasmunshi alleged that the state government was suppressing the truth and rubbished claims of the police firing in self-defence.
“It is a deliberate attempt by the Trinamool Congress (government) to suppress the truth and the manner in which I was prevented from visiting the area where police firing occurred is a reflection of politicisation of the administration,” Minister of State for Urban Development Dasmunshi told reporters here.
Dasmunshi was stopped from entering Tehatta in Nadia district since prohibitory orders were clamped in the area after a police officer fired at a mob chasing him, killing a man, Wednesday. They were protesting against the police for intervening in a land dispute.
Dasmunshi said she had informed the union government about the development since the government had asked her to visit Tehatta to take stock of the situation.
“We have seen the entire incident on TV. The administration is giving a different version, saying they had to open fire in self-defense whereas villagers are feeling unsafe. People of Tehatta have lost faith in the police,” Dasmunshi, an MP from Raiganj in West Bengal, told reporters here.
“No action has been taken against the officer who fired and police are raiding houses,” she said.
She said prohibitory orders were an eyewash to prevent her from visiting the area.
A day ago, Left Front and BJP leaders too were prevented from visiting Tehatta by the district administration.
The Left Front also called for a 24-hour shutdown Friday in the area over the firing incident.
