New Delhi : Concerned and pained over the death of an Indian women after Ireland doctors denied her an abortion, Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi Friday demanded “a high-level probe” into the incident that has caused a global outrage.
Ravi also said his ministry was ready to give all assistance, including matters legal, to the victim’s family.
“A high-level inquiry should be done and the culprits brought to book,” Ravi told IANS.
“The government is ready to give all assistance, including legal, to the family of the victim,” Ravi said.
Ravi is on a week-long visit to Gulf countries. He was in Bahrain when he communicated his ministry’s demands and offer of help to the bereaved family.
Ravi is returning to India Saturday after mobilising representatives of the over six million overseas Indians living and working in the Gulf region for the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) to be held in Kochi, Kerala, in January 2013.
Savita Halappanavar, a Hindu from the Indian state of Karnataka, died of septicaemia Oct 28 in Ireland after doctors there refused to remove the foetus following a miscarriage on the ground that Ireland is a Catholic Christian country.
Halappanavar had arrived Oct 21 with back pain at Galway University Hospital in Ireland where she was found to be miscarrying at 17 weeks.
