New Delhi : The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day and the Lok Sabha till 2 p.m. Tuesday as the opposition continued its protests for the fourth day on the government decision to allow FDI in retail.
The Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, which met at noon after question hour was disrupted, continued to witness noisy scenes as opposition parties raised a din over a decision they say will derail small traders.
Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha were on their feet against foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail.
To the embarrassment of the Congress, members of its ally the DMK used the occasion to flash newspaper clippings related to the 2G spectrum scandal.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party members rushed to the chairman’s podium voicing opposition to a pending legislation on reservation for Dalits and tribals in job promotions in the government.
As the ruckus continued, Rajya Sabha deputy chairman P.J. Kurien adjourned the house till Wednesday, even though little business had been transacted Tuesday.
In the Lok Sabha, which resumed functioning at 12 noon, Trinamool Congress leader Saugata Roy made a brief statement. As the MPs continued to raise slogans, the house was adjourned till 2.
Earlier, soon after proceedings began, opposition members in the Lok Sabha were on their feet.
An exasperated Speaker Meira Kumar said: “The first question is on crime against women, and you are not allowing it.”
Despite her appeals, the protesting MPs did not end their sloganeering.
