Award for unsung heroes launched in Kolkata

Kolkata : ‘Officer’s Choice Anandalok Salaam Bengal’ – an award recognising the contributions of unsung heroes of society was launched Wednesday here amid much fanfare.

“There will be entries in four categories – education, medical and health services, sports, and bravery. For the last three years we have doing this to salute the achievements of the common man and the response has been overwhelming,” said Ashoke Mukherjee, a spokesperson of the sponsoring company.

The event will see eminent Bengalis, namely fashion designer Agnimitra Paul, chess grandmaster Dibyendu Baruah, singer Lopamudra Mitra, and critical care expert Subrata Maitra, as members of an independent jury that will short-list entries and select the winners.

“It is very difficult to judge. There are so many astounding entries. It is heartwarming to see that there are such selfless people in the world,” said Paul, who has been roped in as a judge for the third time.

The felicitation ceremony will take place in Kolkata, Durgapur and Siliguri and a team from Officer’s Choice and Anandalok will travel to the interiors of the state to validate the entries.

“I will be delighted to travel with the team if they can arrange that. Only people will such beautiful minds can do such selfless deeds and bring about a change in society,” said Mitra, a first time jury member.
